Mathematics - Matematika

Mathematics - Matematika

"Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding." ~ William Paul Thurston.

Ročník I. II. III. IV. V. VI. Celkem
Matematika 3 3 4 4 3 5 22

V prvních dvou ročnících si žáci například osvojují odborné anglické termíny a mají možnost mluvit anglicky i v hodinách matematiky.

Dokonalá znalost odborného jazyka umožňuje efektivní práci s cizojazyčnými zdroji a ta přináší i výhodu komparace.

Mezi absolventy najdeme úspěšné studenty Harvard University, Oxfordu, londýnské The School of Economics a dalších zahraničních škol.

Všichni se shodují v tom, že „English Section is the gate to their successful life!

SImilarly to other education disciplines taught at secondary schools, mathematics and its applications belong to the key competences the pupil must master.

In the six-year bilingual education field, mathematics is taught as a compulsory subject in the following time allocation:

Year I. II. III. IV. V. VI. Total
Mathematics 3 3 4 4 3 5 22

Of the above-mentioned time allocation, one lesson is excluded for mathematical exercise. Here, pupils are divided into two groups. The table concerns pupils in the school year 2018-2019 attending the 1st - 4th year. In the 5th and 6th year there is a curriculum of education, where mathematics has a time subsidy of 3 hours a week, of which one hour a week is defined for practical lesson, where pupils are divided into two groups.

The teaching language in the first and second year is Czech, but there are already prerequisites for successful mastering of the transition of mathematics teaching into English, starting with the third year. In the first two years, pupils, for example, acquire professional English terms and have the opportunity to speak English also in math classes.

The transition to mathematics teaching in English from the third year is smooth and without complications, mainly thanks to intense teaching of the English language and literature - pupils have 8 hours in the first and second year.

Pupils can also choose the elective subject Mathematics Seminar in the fifth and sixth year, with a 2 hour weekly time allocation. In these optional subjects, they extend mathematical competences by discussing new topics in the field of mathematics, and the teachers diligently ensure that students can practically apply the topics they are discussing.

The content of the subject is based on the Framework Educational Plan of the Bilingual Grammar School. Contentwise, Mathematics includes the same subject matter as in the Czech language at grammar school, in the compulsory elective course Mathematics Seminar extends this mandatory range of curriculum. The great advantage of the graduate of the English section is that, besides mathematical knowledge, he can fluently communicate English in mathematics. This will enable him to study colleges not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad. A thorough knowledge of the specialized language allows effective work with foreign language resources, and it also brings the advantage of comparison.

Teaching of mathematics is provided by experienced teachers from the first year of study, who usually continue their classroom teaching in English. Traditional and modern methods (such as project lessons) are used in teaching. Since the third year, all teaching materials are in English.

Particular attention is paid to talented pupils who have the opportunity to participate in math competitions, have the opportunity to attend individual tutorials with their teachers, attend a ring of mathematical competitions, to cooperate with the Departments of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science of the University of Olomouc.

As one of the first in the Czech Republic, our English section has a written math from mathematics (since 1997). The written maturita paper consists of two parts - multiple choice test, where students choose one out of five possible answers, and in the second part students have to solve four out of five complex examples. The weight of the written exam is 60%, the oral profile part focuses on verifying mostly theoretical contexts. Maturita exam is performed in English only.

With the introduction of a mandatory state matriculation exam, the English section is already seeking an exemption to test its pupils in the English language in which they have been taught the last four years before math mathematics, on their own model of well-established maturitní písemné práce validated by the Faculty of Science of the University of Olomouc.

School graduates very often return to the English section after entering the chosen college and thank their teachers for their work. Among the graduates we find successful students at Harvard University, Oxford, London School of Economics and other foreign schools. In practice, our graduates apply to important places in research, economics, and education.

Everyone agrees that "English Section is the gate to their successful life!"
